Portia Otoo Inspires: Conquerors' Series; 'FRUITFULNESS'
Fruitfulness as defined by the Merriam Webster dictionary is to be abundantly productive. I define fruitfulness as our ability to acknowledge and make use of our uniqueness. Our uniqueness is our major source of fruitfulness. It is only when we appreciate our uniqueness that we will find true fruitfulness and with this fruitfulness, comes fulfillment.
So many people are chasing fulfillment in diverse ways. Some think they would be fulfilled if they are able to complete tertiary school. After completion, they still do not feel fulfilled so they set out to accomplish something else like getting their dream job, getting married, having children, travelling around, etc. however, after all the chase, they are still the same old unfulfilled people, just older.
One of our greatest mistakes is trying to derive fulfillment from external things. We won't find it because we keep looking in the wrong places. Some of our young folks would not appreciate this message well because they are young and probably haven't started chasing anything yet. But in reality, the frustration exists. People strive so hard to gain something and after they've gained it, they realize it wasn't really what they wanted after all.
Man's deepest search is for fulfillment but quite ironically, not everyone sees it that way. We are searching for something and that's why we always keep striving for something better. We think we might fill that void if only we can make our life more comfortable. That was where hard work and productivity came in.
Frankly speaking, the majority have devised another type of fulfilment; the type which almost everyone keeps running towards. This type of fulfilment says that if only you can strive to be better than your colleague, then you get to feel good about yourself. We are settling for it because it seems achievable.
I call it pseudofulfilment because it is a false fulfilment. It's temporary and it's nothing like true fulfilment. It is the "enjoy while it lasts" kind of fulfilment. It's only a matter of time till you realise that no matter how much you achieve, you'd always have a colleague.
Life is full of choices but I'd rather you choose the true way. You can only find fulfilment in fruitfulness. Trust me; fruitfulness is a lot easier than you think. It is only frustrating when you keep looking the wrong way.
Mind you, every work produces results but not every work produces fruitfulness and fulfillment. It is possible to work so hard and still remain unfruitful and that's why the bible says, 'for the lack of knowledge, my people perish'.
